【内容简介】
海湾战争结束了，三个士兵盘算回家发财去。准尉阿奇?盖茨还有两周时间就要退役；军士特洛伊?巴洛刚做父亲；他们的头儿埃尔金则正从底特律去休他的四个月的假期。三个士兵受命去夺回被萨达姆.侯塞因从科威特窃取的大量黄金，而且不能惹任何麻烦。在他们去执行任务的途中，目睹了战争留下的满目疮痍。
布什总统怂恿伊拉克市民去推翻萨达姆，并保证美国政府将大力提供支持，但当有人真的行动起来时，等待他们的只有无助的死亡。 面对伊拉克所发生的的真实的一切，他们面临了一场人性的挑战，士兵们不得不反思，自己究竟是谁？正在做什么？

幕后制作：
本片用玩笑嘲讽的口吻和夺宝冒险动作片的包装来检讨波斯湾战争，把好莱坞主流片拍出了另类趣味。本片对美伊双方在这场战争所扮演的角色作了相当深入而有趣的分析和批判，四名主角的个性亦塑造得鲜明有趣。在镜头和音响处理上本片还有一大特色，便是将“子弹穿肠过”的威力十分形象化地呈现在银幕上。
这个故事原可拍成主题严肃的战争冒险片，但导演戴维罗素坚持自己的独到见解，以不露痕迹的高明手法，让观众看不到沉重使命，反倒是运用大量动作场面、尖锐的嘲讽笑点、夸张的桥段，创造出一种属于新世代的动作喜剧。罗素的剧本很不平凡，他藉由四人至陌生国家作战，历经深入沙漠寻宝的冒险过程，才让他们了解到每只枪管的背后都存在另一个人的生命，进而尊重这场战争对当地人民的意义。戴维的故事透过这四个人的观点，粉碎美军的战争的态度，并阐述了他们在旅程中，对战争的崇高使命由忽略转为了解的过程。
导演表示，片中的大部份情节几乎都是真实故事改编，海珊从科亏特手中偷得黄金一事也非捏造。他认为这会是一个很有趣的故事背景，让这些在战场上没机会表现的军人，自辟战场，只为寻宝回家过好日子。同时发展出令人省思、娱乐效果并重，剧情十足的动作战争片。
